Cathedral Cave

The Cathedral Cave dive or the Blue Dome is a spectacular dive in Gozo ideal for all levels of divers, especially the more adventurous ones

The Cathedral Cave dive, also called the Blue Dome, is a wonderful dive in Gozo and is not for the faint hearted. To access the dive you have to walk down around 90 steps to the fantastic creek in Ghasri Valley with your gear on, however the beautiful views whilst going down and the dive makes up for it.

Climbing down after a night of rain can be risky and access by boat is recommended. The Cathedral Cave dive starts in a picturesque creek on the right-hand side of the wall and the large entrance to the cave lies at 6 meters and on the way down you will see sea urchins and colourful starfish.

Once inside the cave you will be able to surface and understand why it is called Cathedral Cave; the walls are covered in corals, hydroids, sponges and golden zoanthids. The Cathedral Cave dive in Gozo is a perfect place for underwater photography as the sunlight from the arch of the entrance and the many holes and cracks in the ceiling create amazing blue lights.

Cathedral Cave is good for all levels of diving skills and the depth of the cave is 12-30 meters, with average visibility of 25 meters. In winter and spring, when the weather is a bit cooler Wied il-Ghasri or Ghasri Valley is a beautiful place for country walks or cycling.

Getting to the Cathedral Cave/the Blue Dome Cave

Ghasri Valley can be accessed either from the village square in Ghasri or from Marsalforn. If you are coming from Victoria, take right in the village square roundabout and left at the first stop sign. After a short drive you will arrive to a small chapel where you have to turn right. Keep driving (slowly) on the narrow road until you see a smaller road going to the left where you can park and walk to the creek (3-4 min) From Marsalforn you need to drive or walk past the salt pans after Xwieni Bay and from there it is around 30 min walk, as there is no public transport going there. As you arrive to the small road, on your right this time, park and walk to the creek.
