St. George's Basilica of Victoria is a fine example of richly decorated churches in GozoSt. George’s Basilica is located in the heart of Victoria, Gozo. The parish began during medieval times, while the foundation stone of the St. George's Basilica was laid in 1672. The basilica is coated completely with marble, while the canopy over the high altar is gilded in bronze and gold. However, the most fascinating work of art is a statue of St. George, sculpted in wood by Pawlu Azzopardi in 1838. All paintings in the dome and ceiling are by Giovanni Battista Conti of Rome.
