Valletta Parish Churches

Valletta (St. Augustine)

The parish church in Valletta is dedicated to St Augustine and was originally built by Girolamo Cassar in 1571. In 1765 the church was rebuilt by Giuseppe Bonnici and dedicated by Bishop Mgr G.M. Camilleri in 1906. In 1968 Mgr Archbishop Michael Gonzi made it one of the parish churches of Valletta.

Valletta (St Dominic)

The Dominican church in Valletta is the parish church dedicated to Our Lady of Fair Heavens. The church was built by by Girolamo Cassar and was declared “the principal parish and matrix of the whole of the new city” by Pope Pius V through his Apostolic Bull Ex Debito Pastoralis and was elevated to the dignity of a Minor Basilica 1816. In 1693 the original church was ruined in an earthquake and a new church was built and consecrated on the 15th October 1889

Valletta (St Paul)

The Valletta Parish Church is dedicated to the shipwreck of St Paul and was originally built in 1570 by Girolamo Cassar. The church was rebuilt between 1639 and 1679 and became the collegiate church in 1733.
