Gozo - Xaghra Parish Church

History and information about Xaghra parish church in Gozo

The Xaghara parish church was established in 1688 by Bishop Cocco-Palmeri and is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The first stone of the church was laid in 1815 however it is unclear when the works were finished.

The Xaghara parish church was consecrated in 1878 and was raised to Archipresbyteral status 15 years later on March 1893. The beautiful church was given the title of a Basilica in 1967 and should be on your list of places to visit during your visit to Gozo. The whole church is covered with beautiful marble and a fantastic statue of the young Virgin Mary, brought all the way from Marseilles in 1878.
