XTERRA Cross Triathlon - Malta

XTERRA Malta weekend

XTERRA gives athletes around the world a chance to race in some of the most diverse, spectacular, and challenging natural environments on the planet – from tropical jungles to snow-covered alps. Pro athletes compete for a prize purse of US $7,500 at the Malta event, while amateurs race for national titles and coveted slots to the World Championships in Hawaii.

XTERRA MALTA is organised by Hellfire Events and is set in the spectacular Majjistral Park, in Ghajn Tuffieha. The race follows international XTERRA Rules & Regulations. This is one of the most challenging sport events in Malta!

The Xterra Malta Race In Detail:

The Swim

The 1.5km triangular swim on a 750m course requires a mass start and mid-way land sprint on the Golden Sands bay for two loops. This stunning venue is one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful beaches, with golden coloured sand and crystal clear water. The sea temperature is around 16 Degrees Celsius and requires a wetsuit. Transition is up a flight of steps and around 300m to the bike rack area.

The Bike

The 30km mountain bike is a two-loop 15km route that passes through the Miżieb woodland area and alongside cliff edge trails in the Majjistral Park. This Natura 2000 site is a stunning natural reserve and habitat to some of Malta’s and the Mediterraneans indigenous species of plant, insect and birds. The carefully maintained trails create a stunning scenic route through the park and mix in some technical trails and fast flat pathways around the park.

The Run

The 11km run is a two-loop 5.5km route on the Ġnejna plateau, overlooking Ġnejna and Riviera Martinique bays. These two smaller bays are some of the most photographed natural beauty spots on the island and the run route looks over these bays on cliff-edge trails 200m up. The route has some technical descents but is mainly flat, supported by hydration stops backed by 15th Century watch towers built by the Knights of Malta to signal and warn of invading turks.

Transition Area

The Transition Area and race HQ is the Golden Sands Radisson Blu Resort and the adjacent car park. The venue is fully equipped with logistics, health & safety, medical assistance, toilet facilities, hydration stops, and the race registration and race direction area. Both T1 and T2 are hosted here. The area will be open 90minutes before the race starts, as well as most of the day before the race for bike check in.

Kids Race

The Malta Triathlon Junior Academy will be organising a swim-run-swim event for kids of different ages on the morning of the Championship Race. All children are invited, free of charge, to participate, however a donation to our local charity would be welcome.
