Buy your own Maltese bus
Beautiful traditional yellow buses for sale
Around 40 old Maltese buses are up for sale, so if you’re a lover of the traditional yellow buses that characterised Malta’s transport history, you’re invited to express your interest to Heritage Malta in the next few days.
These buses were part of a group of around 140 old buses, which were replaced by Arriva’s modern fleet last Summer. Of these, the ‘better represented’ buses will be kept by Heritage Malta, to be displayed in an industrial museum, while Identical copies will be sold, with the proceeds going towards the conservation of other buses.
The vehicles’ engines and chassis were often imported from England while the body was then built in Malta in order to fit both the chassis and the Maltese aesthetic. The engine’s brand name usually featured in a prominent place in ornate lettering known as ‘tberfil’ in Maltese.
Preserving Malta's transport history
Joseph Said, charmain of Heritage Malta stated that,"Heritage Malta’s job is to safeguard Malta’s history. The trams that were used in Maltese roads in the past don’t exist anymore because these were scrapped and we couldn’t afford a repeat scenario with the buses."
The traditional Maltese bus enjoyed a cult ranking among both Maltese and tourists, featuring in many photographs taken by tourists and enthusiasts of interesting vehicles. If you can’t afford a life-size Maltese bus, you can definitely find cheaper and smaller versions in any of the souvenir shops all over the island!
