Medical/Health Care
Malta’s history as the 'hospital of the Mediterranean' dates back to the Knights and the ‘Sacra Infermeria’. This tradition continues through to the modern day with the level of service provided being equivalent to other European countries.
There are a mix of private and public healthcare providers, from Doctors,
Dentists, and Ophthalmologists. The newly constructed Mater Dei Hospital
has all the services available in Western European countries and caters
for public health. There are also private hospitals available for a
variety of specialisations as well as general care.
Public Hospitals
Mater Dei, Msida
St Luke's Hospital, Pieta
Sir Paul Boffa Hospital, Floriana
Mount Carmel Hospital, Attard (for the mentally ill)
Zammit Clapp hospital, Sliema (for the elderly)

Before travelling the visitor should contact their respective consulates,
(click for list), as to the level of coverage offered under the reciprocal
agreements.
European travellers should have the EHIC (European Health Identity Card)
which offers the level of cover available under the European Directive.
Reciprocal agreements are in place for Australian and British nationals
visiting the island for no longer than a month.
It is advisable that all travellers have an adequate level of medical
insurance cover before coming to Malta.
For ‘medical tourism’, please contact the institutions directly or use one
of the specialised agencies available on the island.

- No immunisations or vaccinations are needed to enter
Malta. Should you be travelling from a Yellow Fever zone, you will need to
have the correct paperwork with you on entry.
- The tap water is drinkable, but as it is desalinated, has a slight after
taste. Most people prefer bottled water for drinking
- Local produce is fresh and can be consumed.
- For emergency services please contact:
- Ambulance 196
- Emergency 112
- Fire Brigade 199
- Should you require a Doctor, these details will be available locally
through directories or contact the Mater Dei hospital directly for
information. There are local health centres for provision of free
healthcare, but many choose to see private practitioners. You will be
required to pay for these consultations, the price varies from GP.
- The hospital ER is available should no other service provider be
available for treatment. The outpatients department do require prior
referral from local GP’s.
- There are a large number of Pharmacies available around the island.
These frequently have in house GP’s available for consultation. Valid
prescriptions are required for controlled medication. Should you have a
valid long term prescription from your own GP, this must be translated
into English, with the generic name of the medication prescribed.
- Malta’s sun can be exceptionally hot, so due care needs to be applied.
Cover ones head, use the relevant sun block, correct and frequent
hydration. The siesta, as with other Mediterranean countries, is practised
here to avoid the midday sun.
- Jellyfish can be problematic at certain periods in Malta. Local advice
to avoid swimming in bays where the wind is blowing inland can offer some
protection. Also application of white vinegar can ease primary concerns.
Should you get stung by a jellyfish correct medical treatment should be
sought.
