The next recital in the series of Spotlight Concerts at the Manoel's Sala Isouard is being presented on Thursday 26 November at 8pm. The recital features pianist Joanne Camilleri who will perform Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental Goldberg Variations.
This is one of Bach's last compositions and originally written for harpsichord in 1741-2 for his friend Herr Goldberg. The latter was harpsichordist to the insomniac Count Keyserlingk and the variations were supposed to be performed so as to alleviate the Count's suffering. Briefly the work begins with an aria followed by thirty variations in various groups and forms and ends with the Aria da capo. Contrary to what usually happens in such an exercise, the variations are not based on the aria's melody but on its bass line.
