Qrendi

Qrendi: a typical Maltese Village in the South of Malta

Qrendi is located in the South West part of Malta close to Mqabba and Zurrieq. The town is small, with a population of around 3,000, but it incorporates two of the most important Neolithic temples in Malta, Mnajdra and Ħaġar Qim. On the coast side, you can find the Maqluba, a huge karstic depression which plunged from a cliff during a big storm in 1343. Qrendi also houses the spectacular Wied iz-Zurrieq and the famous Blue Grotto.

The village core is quiet, with many old buildings; however, the outskirts contain many modern developments. There are no tourist facilities in the centre, making Qrendi an authentic Maltese village.

There are seven churches and chapels in Qrendi, most of which replaced older structures. Qrendi became a separate parish in 1618, while the elaborate parish church, designed by Lorenzo Gafà on a baroque style, was completed in 1720. In Qrendi, there are two festas held annually. The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated around the last Sunday of June, while the festa of Santa Maria is celebrated on the 15th August. Both festas have their own band clubs who play cheerful marches during their respective festa, as well as produce fireworks, and decorate streets for the occasion. Qrendi is known for the fireworks that it produces, in fact, both firework factories do work for other villages as well.
