Comino
The 3.5km
sq. island is located between Malta & Gozo, renowned for it's solitude, and
beautiful Cyan waters. With an official population of 4, the island is a
nature reserve and bird sanctuary. Peace and beauty are it's main assets.
The island has always been isolated, and during the
middle ages was used as a pirates hold for attacking ships commuting between
Gozo and Malta. The island has served as an exile for errant Knights, a
prison for spies, and a defensive garrison during the world wars. Still to
this day the armed forces of Malta use the island as a lookout against
contraband, and illegal hunting.
Man
made structures are few and far between, which is in keeping with the
island's 'solitude'. St Mary's Tower and battery, constructed
in the early parts of the 17th & 18th century respectively, provided a
valuable defensive link between other towers built on the eastern coast of
the islands. The tower has been restored and is well preserved, and still
holds iron cannons from it's days a defensive garrison.
The
white washed chapel, Sacred Family Upon its Return from Egypt,
has origins dating back to the 12th Century according to maritime maps
of the time. Regular masses are still held for the island's residents and
visitors.
Comino
also offers a hotel which is open to the public from April - October. With
either rooms or holiday bungalows available.
Another
important reason why Comino is so popular with tourists is the 'blue
lagoon', situated between Comino and the small islet, Cominotto. It's rich
turquoise waters, white sandy bottom, offers divers, swimmers, a
paradisiacal place to enjoy the tranquillity of the island. Teaming with
marine life, the 'blue lagoon' is a must see whilst visiting the islands.
Comino has also had it's moments of fame on films such as 'The Count of
Monte Cristo', 'Troy' and 'Swept Away'.
The island
has boat links from Mgarr (Gozo) and Cirkewwa (Malta), times can vary and
should be verified locally beforehand ; |
